Program Development

In May, 2016, Brooke led a seven-week pilot Guided Meditation Program for administration and staff of Grizzly Youth Academy in May – June, 2016. Two fifteen- to twenty-minute lunchtime sessions of gentle movement, breathing techniques, and mindfulness were offered daily. Feedback was positive and attendance was relatively high, greater than expected. Brooke was mentored by Jeffrey Rice, cofounder of The Center for Wellness and Achievement in Education in San Francisco, CA. She was contracted through the San Luis Obispo County Board of Education.

In July, 2015, Grizzly Youth Academy, a quasi-military residential program for at-risk 16- to 18-year olds, began a ten-week evidence-based program integrating Yoga-based practices into counseling groups. Brooke developed the program, administering Restorative Yoga, Yoga nidra and meditation techniques and self-report surveys measuring physical, mental, emotional, behavioral and mood outcomes. Students will be tracked for one year post-therapy. Attention-training and relaxation techniques for emotional self-regulation are highlighted. This program is on-site at Camp San Luis Obispo, a National Guard post and is funded by The United States Department of Justice.

In 2014, Brooke developed a pilot Yoga therapy program for the County of San Luis Obispo Adult Treatment Court Collaborative, a federally-funded, intensive outpatient resource serving parolees with a dual diagnosis of substance abuse and mental health disorders.

Brooke raised funds from private donors and community service organizations which provided Yoga mats, Yoga blankets and weighted bags for trauma- and nervous system-informed Yoga to ease trauma symptoms, including anxiety and depression.

Client pre-, ongoing and post-program self-report surveys determined that therapeutic program objectives were met.

In 2013, Brooke developed a Yoga program at SPIRIT Peer Empowerment Center in Grass Valley, California. A State of California Mental Health Services Act funds recipient and nationally recognized peer-run facility, SPIRIT acts as a day center providing peer counseling and peer counseling training; meals; kitchen, bathroom, shower and laundry facilities; a community garden; mental health first aid trainings and support, serving persons with mental health disorders, including veterans and the homeless. Twice-weekly Yoga classes were developed and offered and grew beyond the capacity for interested participants.

Brooke has offered workshops upon request to staff and clientele at Transitions-Mental Health Association in San Luis Obispo, California. Therapeutic Yoga support to increase resilience and reduce staff burnout was notably well-received. An evidence-based, therapeutic Yoga program is in early development.

Introducing the concepts of Nervous System-informed Yoga, Spirituality and Social Work and Spiritual Emergence, this twelve-hour professional training “trains mental health professionals, as well as caregivers and the general public, in bringing chair yoga postures, breathing practices, deep relaxation (yoga nidra) and meditation into a traditional medical/psychotherapeutic setting. These systems have been proven to reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress disorder in controlled research studies and to aid in the healing of physiological disorders.”
